What is a PNR Number?
Understanding your Passenger Name Record helps you track your train ticket and plan your journey with Indian Railways confidently.
PNR Full Form & Meaning
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is a unique 10-digit code generated by IRCTC India for every reserved train ticket booking on Indian Railways. The PNR links all information about your journey — names of passengers, travel class, train number, date, and current booking status — in a single identifier.
Your pnr number is printed in the top-left of your physical ticket and appears in every IRCTC booking confirmation SMS and email. It is also used by Indian Railways for all post-booking operations including cancellation, modification, and chart preparation.
To do a pnr enquiry, you only need this 10-digit number — no other passenger details or login is required on Cleartrip.

What Do PNR Status Abbreviations Mean?
When you check your irctc pnr status, the result shows a status code for each passenger. Here is what every code means for your train ticket.
| Code | Full Form | Board Train? | What it Means |
|---|---|---|---|
| CNF | Confirmed | Yes | Your berth is fully confirmed. Coach and seat number are allocated. You can board the train. |
| RAC | Reservation Against Cancellation | Yes | You have a shared half-berth and are permitted to board. You'll be upgraded to a full berth if a confirmed passenger cancels. |
| WL / GNWL | Waitlisted / General Waitlist | No* | No confirmed seat. GNWL has the best confirmation odds among all waitlist types. Cannot board if still WL after chart prep. |
| PQWL | Pooled Quota Waitlist | No* | Issued for intermediate stations sharing a common quota. Lower confirmation probability compared to GNWL. |
| RLWL | Remote Location Waitlist | No* | Assigned to remote or intermediate stations. Confirmations depend on local quota cancellations. |
| RLGN | Remote Location General | RAC only | Similar to RLWL but may get RAC status before chart preparation if cancellations occur at origin. |
| CAN | Cancelled | No | Ticket has been cancelled either by the passenger or by Indian Railways. A refund is processed per IRCTC cancellation policy. |
| SCR | Side Charting Reservation | Yes | A confirmed side-berth allocation issued during chart preparation from residual quotas. |
* Passengers with WL status after final chart preparation are not allowed to board the train per Indian Railways policy.

Cleartrip fetches live data directly from Indian Railways — no IRCTC login, no app download, no registration required. What is a PNR number and where is it on my ticket?
A PNR (Passenger Name Record) is a unique 10-digit number assigned by IRCTC India at the time of booking. It records all details of your journey on Indian Railways. On a printed ticket, the PNR number appears in the top-left corner. In your IRCTC booking confirmation SMS and email, it is labelled as "PNR No." The number is required for all pnr enquiry, cancellation, and modification operations.
What does RAC mean — can I board the train with RAC status?
RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) means you are allocated a shared half-berth and are permitted to board the train. Two RAC passengers share one berth during the journey. If a confirmed passenger cancels, RAC passengers are upgraded to full berths in order of their RAC number. Unlike waitlisted passengers, RAC holders never need to worry about being denied boarding.
When is the Rajdhani chart and other train charts prepared?
Indian Railways prepares the final reservation chart 4 hours before the scheduled departure of any train, including the Rajdhani chart. A preliminary chart may be released 10–24 hours before departure for Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto express trains. Once the chart is finalised, all RAC and waitlist statuses are locked for boarding purposes. It's advisable to do a pnr status check 4–6 hours before your journey.
How accurate is Cleartrip's PNR prediction and confirmation probability?
Cleartrip's pnr prediction engine analyses multiple real-time data signals: your current waitlist position, historical cancellation patterns for the specific train and travel class, seasonal demand trends, and chart preparation timelines from IRCTC. The model continuously learns from new data to improve its confirmation probability forecasts. It is particularly accurate for high-frequency routes like Delhi–Mumbai and trains with large historical booking datasets.
Can PNR status change after chart preparation?
Yes, within limits. After chart preparation, the status of RAC passengers can still change to CNF (confirmed) if confirmed passengers cancel their train ticket before or at the time of departure. However, waitlisted passengers who remain on the waitlist after chart preparation cannot board and should not proceed to the station. Always do a final pnr status check 2–3 hours before departure to confirm your status.
How to check PNR status via SMS on Indian Railways?
To check train pnr status via SMS without internet access: Type PNR [your 10-digit pnr number] and send it to 139 — the official Indian Railways enquiry number. You will receive an SMS reply with the current status of all passengers on that PNR. You can also call 139 directly for live railway enquiry assistance.
What is the difference between GNWL, RLWL, and PQWL?
GNWL (General Waitlist): Issued for bookings from or near the origin station. Has the highest confirmation rate among all waitlist types. RLWL (Remote Location Waitlist): Issued for remote intermediate stations. Confirmation depends on local quota cancellations. PQWL (Pooled Quota Waitlist): Assigned when multiple intermediate stations share a quota pool. Generally lower confirmation probability than GNWL. Always use Cleartrip's pnr prediction to understand your specific odds based on train history.
